This thread summarizes a problem that some people are having.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=839367

I am having it too.  Had the tab a week.  During the week, I had to restart my (Verizon FiOS) wireless router.  After doing that, the Tab refuses to get an IP address from the router - no WiFi for you.  Other devices work fine.  No combination of obvious fixes helped: forget the network, rescan + connect, cycle power, etc., no good.  It just won't get an IP address.  As the above link indicates, other people have had this problem.

The only thing that seems to work to clear it up is a hard reset of the Tab.  That is unacceptable to me, don't have time to set it up again, especially if it's just going to happen again in a couple weeks.  And especially if this is going to happen on my home network, work network, etc.

I went with the static IP solution.  That worked and I can now connect to WiFi again.  That seems like the most agreeable workaround until a proper solution emerges from Samsung or Verizon.  Though this does not seem carrier dependent.

Something to be aware of in case your Tab WiFi stops working.  Maybe they are trying to get you to use that data plan :grumble:

I have the same issue, but only with my Verizon Fios router. Every other router seems to work fine.

LouCap, good to know.  Is this an ActionTec router?  I have had all kinds of problems with that POS router.  The Sonos audio system basically won't work at all with it.  Makes sense that it is at least part of the problem.  Worth noting, I have not had similar WiFi issues with an iPad.

Have you looked into replacing that router?  I did awhile ago but there weren't really any options that seemed proven.  Will Verizon swap that out if you squawk enough?

I had the same problem of not being able to obtain an IP via DHCP through WIFI. It would continually say "Obtaining IP address". Watching the logs on my WAP, I could see the tab completing the handshake but failing (disassociated) after that.

Plugged in static IP settings and that worked but obviously not a perfect solution.

I DID RESOLVE THE PROBLEM by doing a factory restore and now it works like a champ.

Also, spoke with Samsung level 3 support. The gentleman was very friendly and while not versed on this exact issue did comment that one other user had complained of a similar problem with the Sprint version and that it must have something to do with the fact that mine (Verizon, with data plan removed) and the other caller both use CDMA natively.

I got the same issue.
But by changing Wi-Fi channel to "1", the trouble was solved.

Bought my Tab last week and I've been having the same problem since day one. However, yesterday I flashed it with the latest ROM and so far the problem seems to have stopped.

I was able to use WiFi but since Norton updated their Internet Security software I have ceased to be able to use it.  I am in contact with Norton but so far they have not put forward a working solution.   My Wii and Sony Walkman have also been un-Wifi'd.

Hi, I travel a lot for work, have had my Tab on Sprint for about 1 week, Wifi was working fine, then all of a sudden last night, at a Doubletree Hotel, it simply didn't work.  within Wifi settings, it showed connected but no apps would work (error messages for both the browser and Market)

So...mistake #1, I did a chat session on samsung.com.  After a couple of soft reset suggestions with the Tab, Wifi, etc, they went straight to the Factory Reset option.  I told them to shove it, that was nonsense.

THEN I called samsung support, got through to level 3 support (eventually), they were actually very nice and at least offered another possible suggestion.

**Per Samsung Support, The current Tab with Wifi is NOT certified to work on 802.11 N wireless, A, B, G no prob, just not N yet**

Now that didn't actually help me (no way this hotel was advanced enough to have N), but maybe that will help someone else with this issue.

I got in my car and went to a Starbucks and a supermarket and the Wifi worked FINE.  Turns out that Hilton family properties try to use private IP addresses when giving WiFi Sessions, and by calling their 800 Tech support and asking to be given a PUBLIC IP address, it solved the issue immediately.

I've had connectiviity issues with hotels with my laptop too that this has solved the issue, but the thing that p__sed me off is that samsung just wanted me to go right to the factory reset.

It appears that there are lots of OTHER, far less drastic actions that can help, but Samsung chat doesn't hava clue about them.

Hope this helps someone, cheers.

Finally problem got resolved Big Grin .....
there is no need for factory reset the tablet......
after the one week R&D over TAB i got the resolution.....

the problem i found was with the DHCP runing in my network.

I have DHCP enabled broadband router(BB Router)......and my two wi-fi AP's are connected to this BB router

So what my TAB exactly do is.....
IT first ask the Wi-fi router for obtaining IP address and actually it forwards this request to BB Router...(but it fails in that)

So what exactly i have done is....I have disable the DHCP in my BB router and enabled DHCP in my Wi-fi router.....
and it worked like a charm.........
so just try it and enjoy..............

Dear Kevin

I am stuck with the same problem as you...Obaining IP address from my router never ends...it continues for hours.

Can you please elaborate how to solve it by using a fixed IP address? How to do on our android 2.2 Samsung tablet ?

I will appreciate a step by step explanation..

I wish you Happy New Year!

I am having the same problem.  At work the Galaxy Tab connected just fine to a TP-Link wireless router.  That was the first day.  Starting on the 2nd day it wouldn't connect.  The router sees the Tab but the tab says waiting for IP address.  It has been doing this for 2 weeks now.

At home it connects every time to a proprietary Bell router.  Plus it connects to my Dad's router everytime (unsure of brand) and my brothers (Linksys).

I too would like to get more info on this bug.

at this stage it seems my problem is solved. What I did is to reset the router...obviously though, you cannot do it with your work router...

Let's see how many days it will keep stable

Thanks
Saulo

To all colleagues, since this issue is still unresolved, ie no official patch/work around from samsung/android, I hope my input from Thailand may provide some insight.
My situation is unique, I have TWO galaxy tabs, one bought in Nov for myself and second one bought Dec 22 for my dad. My brother in law also got galaxy S for christmas. In my house, using net gear Adsl modem, router, all three works fine with wifi. My galaxy tab also works fine with my old net gear wifi access point at work. I use dhcp and there are many devices connect to the net gear AP. I also connect successfully to public network(True co.) in Thailand and many of my university AP. Only when we go to my dad home with Huawey modem and Tplink AP that all samsung tab/galaxy s have problem. I tried reset , changed channels, reboot. Nothing works more than a few hours.
I use gsm phone and TOT3G . . No CDMA or data plan conspiracy here:).
So after reading through all the posts, since tomorrow is still a public holiday in Thailand, I will go and buy Net gear ADSL/AP and replace tplink. ( I don't know how to flash tplink and I don't work for any IT company Happy) If it works, then it is the tplink incompatibility with galaxy tab/S. It seems that few others AP model in US has tbe same problem. Will test this out and let you know.
Happy New Year 2011!
